This fully illustrated catalogue explores the nature and significance of Holman Hunt's vision and its relevance to modern audiences. Unlike many artists, including his Pre-Raphaelite brothers, Hunt refused to shy away from the pivotal issues of his day. The audacity, emotional intensity and hyperrealism of his pictures made views uncomfortable in his time and perhaps ours. Rather than painting “pretty pictures” he embraced the bizarre and the ugly, which give his works maximum impact. By the end of the nineteenth century, Hunt was a leading international figure whose paintings were known through engravings in English-speaking countries around the world.
